The Museum of You - The Legacy You're Already Building
I love watching The Repair Shop. There's something deeply moving about watching a worn, forgotten object be brought back to life. Not for its monetary value, but for the stories it holds. A grandmother's music box. A father's old compass. A child's first toy. Each one a thread in someone's life, carried forward by the people who loved them.
But what strikes me most isn't the craftsmanship. It's what happens before any mending begins.
They clean the item first.
Gently, thoroughly, removing years of dust and grime. Not to erase the past, but to reveal it. That simple act of clearing allows the restorers to truly see what they're working with.
I think about that a lot in my work as a legacy planner.
So many of us have accumulated 'dust'. The unfinished tasks, the unspoken wishes, the drawer of documents nobody can quite decipher. We mean to sort it out. We just haven't yet.
But here's what I've found: when you take the time to clear the clutter, to get honest about where things stand, what needs to be tidied up, what can be let go, something remarkable happens. Clarity arrives. And with it, a quiet sense of relief.
You start to see what truly matters. Not just what you own, but what you value. Not just what you've accumulated, but what you want to pass on.
Recently was the acknowledgement of International Museum Day. A day dedicated to the stories objects carry and the cultures they preserve. It feels like the perfect moment to think about the museum of your own life.
What represents you across the different eras of your story? What have you inherited: values, heirlooms, habits - that has quietly shaped who you are? What do you hope the people you love will remember, long after you're gone?
You don't need a grand plan to begin. Start with something small and true.
Write down three memories that matter to you. Take out something you've stored away for 'someday.' Sit with the question: what does my legacy look like, right now?
Because legacy isn't just something you leave. It's something you live, and something you can choose to shape, starting today.
When you're ready to go deeper, I'd love to help you explore it. Visit www.livinglegacy.ie and take the Living Legacy Advance Planning Readiness Assessment. Because when you start to take stock of your life lived so far, you never know what treasures you'll find.
